A Short History

Marlow at first glance has the Wow! of a thriving modern town. Looking deeper the fine period, mainly Georgian, buildings of the High Street and West Street can also be seen.

In the 11th century Marlow was endowed with a number of monastic foundations. At Widmer Farm the remnants of a chapel of the 12th century together with crypt can still be seen.

Our much-photographed suspension bridge was constructed from 1829-1832 and nearby, overlooking the Thames is the delightful Court Garden House, built in the late 1700s. This now forms part of a comprehensive leisure and pool complex.

The big surge in Marlow’s growth came about after World War II when the delights of this rural town were discovered by people commuting to London. In the 60 years since, hundreds of businesses, including high-tech concerns have set up here, the population has more than trebled.

From the Knights Templar to Prince Frederick Prince of Wales and son of George II, from Mary Shelley of Frankenstein fame to our modern day Sir Steven Redgrave, Marlow has a great history; all these and many others have contributed to the colourful history of Marlow.

The River Thames

Marlow's main leisure focus is the River Thames where pleasure boat trips, canoeing, sailing and rowing are available and fishing of coarse. The boating public can access the river in several places and small boats, power & sail can be slipped at the end of St Peter Street. The banks are ideal for strolling, cycling and picnicking.

For the many walkers the new Thames Path is a National Trail that passes through Marlow. Mostly following the old towpath, this path meanders with the Thames, right from its source near Cirencester. Level going, and easily accessed by a variety of transport the Path is family-friendly, and suitable for inexperienced hikers. It is already enormously popular.
